Widely hailed as a benchmark for sport sedan since its launch in 1989, the 5-series is set to undergo the next evolution. The 1997 lineup comprises two Sedan models: the 6-cylinder 528i and the V8 540i. They join Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in providing side airbags.
The 540i, with a 282-horsepower V8, has qualities reminiscent of the M5 that BMW offered until 1993. A 6-speed manual is optional. Even with its performance rivaling that of the old M5, the 540i starts with a base price that is substantially lower.
The 528i Sedan is powered by 190-horsepower inline six. Both the 528i and the 540i enjoy BMWΓÇÖs version of stability/traction control. A 4-sensor, 4-channel anti-lock braking system with ventilated 4-wheel discs contributes to the 5-SeriesΓÇÖ phenomenal stopping power.
